CHAPTER 7 - SIX SUITS A DYING

THE DARK FIGURES swayed under the water as Chris looked down at them. They were almost hypnotic. They moved like fish in an aquarium, virtually a perfect screensaver, well you know except if they weren’t dead people who were now zombies.

Chris got to his feet with his ear ringing. He glanced at the screen on his sleeve, why hadn’t the suit saved him from either of his falls? A frowning snowman greeted him, with a sad looking 9% next to him. Underneath both was a warning, “power saver mode activated, auto responses disabled.” Well, at least that made sense, but, fuck did his eye and ear hurt. He dabbed at his eye with his sleeve. Blood covered it, and his eye was swollen shut. He shook his head to try and get the ringing to stop. It didn’t.

The bodies in the pool again caught his interest. There was something about them. He leaned over the side of the pool to get a better look. The zombies seemed to be tied to the bottom of the pool and wrapped in some sort of netting. Why were there zombies tied to the bottom of Riley’s pool, wrapped in nets? That didn’t add up. But neither did the phone call from Gillian, or the bear in the kid’s room.

Whatever, none of it mattered right now. He had to turn the power back on so that he could call a new sleigh, so that he could get back to the north pole and save Kat, along with the Elves.

Other than the pool, the basement was empty. It looked more like a garage than a basement, well, except for the pool. Cautiously he moved across the vast empty room to a door on the far side,

The more he thought about it, the more it was all his fault. He’d sent the zombie up to the north pole through his bag. He’d put his wife and friends in danger by simply not thinking. He was too busy thinking about himself. Come to think about it, he’d been doing that a lot lately. But he had a reason, a reason that made it hard to do much else other than the basics of living. Even then, he’d questioned the need for him to continue doing that too. But he’d stayed for them, well mostly her, Kat, Mrs. Claus.

He reached the door and peeked out the small window in it. Snow filled the air, making it impossible to see more than a few feet outside the door. Though he could see dim lights, were those the lights he’d seen from upstairs when they’d been in the room with the big glass windows? The harder he looked, the more lights he felt he could see. Were they a path? A path to the utility building? Why hadn’t Riley told him about the lights?

Splashes filled the silence of the large room. Chris glanced back to the pool to see hands reaching over the edge, trying to climb out.
